A 773, 186.) „Gran Capitano“  – Gonzalo de Córdoba. „The ,gran Capitano‘ as he was called was so popular that a first edition of his printed portrait was soon exhausted and a second had to be made“, schrieb ETC 1940. „It is evi- dent that the arguments which are meant to confirm the precedence of Hopfer’s etching over the Italian print cannot stand a thorough investigation. In my opinion the latter is an authentic portrait of Gonsalvo from about 1500. […] Where could the painted portrait from which both versions in question evidently are graphic translations have originated ? […] Is there somebody in Venice who could have painted it ? […] there exists in the Earl of Yarborough collection a picture already mentioned by Waagen. […] In spite of many argu- ments in its favor I do not dare to insist on the authenticity of the painting in Yarborough. In its present state it does not look like an original of about 1500.“ (Tietze-Conrat 1940b, 172–175.) „Die Behauptung, dass Giorgione ihn [Gonsalvo] bei dieser Gelegenheit porträtiert haben soll, ist wohl frei erfunden, nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil ein solches Bildnis bislang nicht iden- tifiziert werden konnte.“ (Feser 2008, 89.) Als Witwe des 1921 verstorbenen britischen Gene- ralkonsuls in Neapel hatte Churchill Medizin an der London School of Medicine und in Cambridge studiert. Sie engagierte sich für die Labour Party und war Verfasserin mehrerer Bücher zu Fragen des Mutterschutzes und der Kinderwohlfahrt (N.  N. 1954).
