Guido Adler’s influence in North America is evident – and, we believe, important – not because it transplanted models and institutional structures, or even abodyof scientificmethodand literature, but because the Central European and the American approaches to music scholarship were compatibleinseveralessentialways.Asmusicology inNorthAmericagrew, and especially as it fully embraced the modern fields of ethnomusicology and Americanmusicstudies, scholarsandthe institutions inwhichthey taughtand conductedresearchdidrecognize the influencesofGuidoAdler inAustria, and theydrewuponthese influences, notbecause theycontainedtheheritageof the past, butbecause theycontainedmuchthatwas familiar in thepresent. TheConversation GuidoAdlerandPaulNettl PVB: Bruno, shallwestartoutpersonally?Perhaps that is thebestway tostart out.YouneverknewAdler? BN: No. When I was a kid in Prague between 1930 and 1939, in the late Thirties, I suspect I heard the name, but I don’t think I knewanything aboutwhat thismeant. After we came to theUnited States in 1939,my father often expressed concern aboutwhat had happened toAdler and didn’t really hear much about him.My father was worried that Adler would somehowbemolested by theNazis. Then he occasionally heard thatAdlerwasOK.Therewas anodd thing that, in the early 1940s,my father got a postcard fromAdler.Well, he didn’t exactly get a postcard. TherewasapostcardthatcametohiminPrinceton.Thepostcardsimply had theaddress “BattleRoad,Princeton,NewYork”– thewrongstate – and nobody’s name, and themessage was “Best thanks. Kind regards. GuidoAdler. 13.III.40.”5BattleRoadwas, I think, the address of the In- stituteforAdvancedStudy, anditwasdeliveredthereandreceivedbyDr. OswaldVeblen,6Directorof the Institute, whodiscoveredthatmy father wassomeonewhoperhapsknewAdler.7ThatwasanindicationthatAdler 5 Princeton is in theAmericanstateofNewJersey. 6 OswaldVeblen(1880–1960)wasanAmericanmathematician,whoseresearchcenteredonthe development of atomic physics and the theory of relativity.
