1930.
PVB: TheywerebothAmericans, but they studied inVienna?
BN: Yes.
PVB: Were theirPh.D.s fromVienna?
BN: Yes. I don’t think theywere actually advisees technically ofAdler’s, but
they studied with him. You know it’s interesting, if you read Adler’s
autobiography,hereallydoesn’ttalkabouthisstudentsverymuch,except

might, “Well, letme tell you aboutmy students,” and then list them. I

PVB: Itmaywellbethecasetoday inCentralEurope. Idon’tknowthatthereis
that much Doktorvater–Doktorkind relationship. That’s also relevant
whenwe even think about the questionof influences. Iwonder, Bruno,

BN: Oh, sure.Hisbook, Introduction toMusicology, is verymuchbasedon
Adler’sMethodederMusikgeschichte.12Curiously, itwas intendedtobe
a textbook for musicology in the United States, but then, when Glen

I don’t think the book was very much used by people like Manfred
Bukofzer13 (1910–1955), Edward Lowinsky14 (1908–1985), or Karl
