comestomind.Thereareothers. It’s interesting that intheUnitedStates
therearethesepeople,buttheyaren’tconnectedtouniversities.Certainly,
oneofAdler’smain accomplishments, in fact, but also ashe saw it,was
theDenkmäler der Tonkunst inÖsterreich.The ideawas theywere not
just forhistorical study,but rather forpublicationof the things thatyou
wouldperform.TheAustrianonewasnotreally thefirst, theGermanone
starteda fewyears earlier.66
PVB: But theAustriansare still going.
BN: Theyare,andIthinktheyweremoresuccessful.Theywereabletoco-opt
allkindsofmusic thatwasnotbyAustrians.Czechcomposersandsoon,
Bohemia-dwelling.My father considered this somehow the pinnacle of
scholarly accomplishment. Clearly, the purposewas, first of all, to per-
formanational duty and to show that theAustrians really had thebest
music, and to provide away of performing. They did publish some of
themwith scoreandparts.
PVB: It’s something I hadn’t really thought about. It’s certainly the case that
critical editionsandthe traditionofcritical editions intheUnitedStates
are inseparable fromcreatingperformance editions. It’s absolutely cen-
tral to what A-R Editions does, whether it’s in their historical series,
whether it’s in their collegium series, or whether it’s in something like
their publications fromoral traditions.67
BN: That’s trueofMUSA,of course,with someexceptions.68
PVB: TheRossiniandVerdieditionsattheUniversityofChicago,they’renotto
put on the shelves. They’re for RiccardoMuti69 (bn.1941) to perform
