volved in the notion that nomatter what else you do, you have an un-
derstanding of folkmusic, even if basic. I don’t think that’s true of the
Adlerpeople.
PVB: No,theoneveryvisibleroleheplays,andwhichismentionedbythefolk-
musicscholars,isthathewaspartofthecommissionin1904thatfounded
the series,DasVolkslied inÖsterreich,73which reallywas a studyof in-
dividual regions. Therewas evengoing tobe a Jewish-music volume. It

andheplayedavisible role.
BN: Ithinkhewassomethingofanationalist. Itgetsmentionedseveral times
inhis autobiography.MaybeAdler couldbeassociatedwithanother as-
pect of the development of musicology, including a certain omnivo-
rousness. First of all, the idea that the individual should have some
knowledge of and interest in everything. The field as a whole is com-
prehensive. I think he didn’t really go into, “well, now, shouldwe have
zoomusicology?”Hetendedtopushtheborder.Thiswascontinuedmore
intheUnitedStatesprobably thanelsewhere.That’s certainlyapossible
areaofAdler’s influence.
