verymuch concernedwith the notion, asKennethLevy79 (1927–2013)
said, “goodmusicologymusthave either a first-classproblemor first-
class music, or both.” And that was true of Americanmusic. I don’t
knowwhetherAdlerwouldhave said, “Americanmusic,what’s that?”
Orwhether hewouldhave said, “well, sure, every country has its own
music.”At somepoint, whenpeople likeCharlesHammandH.Wiley
Hitchcock80 (1923–2007) and Richard Crawford81 (bn. 1935) began to
promulgate this. I thinkRichCrawford is one personwho verymuch
helped things turnaround.Now, there’s almostnoonedoinganything
except American music. Well, I’ve overstated that. But in Austria in
Adler’s earlierdays,noonewasdoinganythingexceptAustrianmusic.
(Well, I’veoverstated that too, I suppose.)
