the erection of a monument dedicated to Austria (Austria-Denkmal). This
monument was to become the only example of allegorical representation of
Austriainthiscontext.Itsmessagecouldnothavebeenclearer:itwasatributeto
the genius ofAustria thathad come to rule overBucovina.The sculptorwas a
professoratthelocalschoolforappliedarts(Gewerbeschule),KarlPekary.35The
Dietorganizedtheunveilingof thestatueon12May1875; theprominentguest
fromViennawasminister for Cults and InstructionKarl von Stremayr repre-
senting the Austrian government as well as the emperor. Themonumentwas
placedontheCriminalplatz (namedsobecauseof the tribunal thatwas located
there) that was now baptized Austria-Platz.36 The celebration began in the
morning by a religious service in all churches and synagogues followed by a
march (Huldigungfestzug) towards the square where the monument was
standing.After theunveilingof thestatueallparticipantsgatheredinthehallof
theuniversity for the festiveopening.37
InthefollowingyearsCzernowitzwasvisitednotonlybytheemperorbutalso
byhis sonRudolph,heir to the throne, in July1887,38aswell asbyotherArch-
dukes thus showing interest and concern of the dynastywho did notwant to
appearneglecting the remoteprovince.At theoccasionofFrancis Josephthird
visit in September 1880 the city built a triumphal arch (Triumphpforte) sur-
mountedby the emperor’smottoViribusunitis.But the townwas still lacking
significant memorials: an article of the Czernowitzer Presse in January 1897
regrets that the city has no other prestigious monument than the Austria-
Denkmal.The author suggests that themunicipal council should take the ini-
tiativeofbuildingastatueoflateRudolphtocommemoratethe10thanniversary
