The localHungarianpoliticians immediately realized that theydidnothave
the necessary resources to uphold a separate party organization and compete
with the government sponsored one. Therefore, theydecided to start negotia-
tionstofindaplaceforthemselves.Butinordertostrengthentheirposition,they
establishedaso-calledUnitedHungarianExecutiveCommitteefromBras‚ovthat
emphasizedthenecessityofnationalunity inthecitydominatedbySaxonsand
Romanians.ItdidnotlasttoolongthattheyagreedtotheoneconditiontheLord
Lieutenantset:evictionofafellowmemberfromtheCommittee,whophysically
insulted in the parliament primeminister K#roly Khuen-H8derv8ry in early
1910.After theycomplied, theLordLieutenant,CountZsigmondMikes, readily
accepted the role of the patron of the newly foundedUnitedHungarianCivic
PartyofBras‚ov. 56
The agreement was simple: every political party was dissolved and their
members joined theneworganization thatwas the sole representativeof every
Hungarian in the city. The new party promised to abandon so-called party
politicsandemphasizedinsteadnationalunity.Therefore, itmadeanattemptto
integrate lowermiddleclassandworkingclassHungarians, too–amovehardly
surprisinggiven the socialprofile of theHungarian inhabitantsof the city. But
the party not only paid lip service to this inclusion, its larger representative
bodieswere filledwithmembers from these social strata, such as locksmiths,
railwayemployees,postal employees, et cetera.57
Theideaofnationalunitywasalreadyastrongindicationofthenatureofthe
party: itwasaminorityparty,andtheprogramreinforcedthis impression.The
main goal of the organizationwas not political, but rather organizational: to
unite in one organization everyHungarian irrespective of political views and
socialbackground,andtoorganizeHungarianlifeinthecity.Thus,thepartywas
more like a cultural association that organized commemorations of historical
events, cultural venues on the occasions of feasts, andwas a representative of
special economic interests.58
