Table1. Somepossible scenarioswithourproposedsmartbuildingsystem
Example Concernedentities
Comfort: The temperature in a floor is detected as high. In this case, the
smart building system should automatically turn on the air conditionner to
an appropriate temperature, especially if there are inhabitants in the same
location. The same action should be donewhen a high level of humidity or
CO2 isdetectedwithin thebuilding Sensor (e.g., tempera-
ture); Device (e.g., air
conditioner); User (e.g.,
PublicData);Location
Safety:Astrong storm started suddenly. The smart building system should
automaticallysecureall theareasbylockingwindows,doorsandtherooftop.
Also,analarmmustbe triggeredsuggestingthe inhabitants tostay insideand
go to their respectivehouses Sensor (e.g., wind mea-
surement);Actuator (e.g.,
windows); User (e.g.,
PublicData);Location
Energy saving:Theweather suddenly becomes rainy after itwas sunny. In
this case, the solar platesmust be stored tomake space forwater tanks for
water collection Sensor (e.g., sun, rain);
Device (e.g., solarpanels,
water tanks)
Security:Apersonwhich is not allowed to access thebuilding (e.g., a non-
inhabitant, an uninvited and unaccompanied guest) is localized inside the
building (e.g., garage, a floor). The building should be locked waiting for
identityverificationandactivate the securityalarm Sensor (e.g., presence);
Device (e.g., alarm),User
(e.g.,PublicData)
• Variable: is a constantor an inconstant todeclare forusewithin the system(e.g.,
clock for the time,boolean).
• Thing:definedbya timeanda location. It canbeeither anapplianceorauser.
• Time: the timewhenauser is located inanewlocationoranactionoccurswithin
thebuilding (e.g., detectionof a sensor, change in adevice state) or outside (e.g.,
change in theexternal environment). It canbeaspecific time tioradelay [t1...t2].
• Location:user’s location (e.g., elevator, garage)oranappliance (e.g., rooftop).
• Appliance:a smart appliance in thebuilding. It canbesensor, actuatorordevice.
• Device: a smart devicewhich canbeusedby the residents or automatically initi-
atedbyanactuator afterdataprocessing.
• Actuator: in chargeof initiatingautomatic action(s). It is installedonobjectsnot
equippedwithelectronics (e.g., door,window).
• Sensor: inchargeofdetectingdifferent informationabout thebuildingfor thedata
processingphase.
• User: the resident profilewhich represent its information. It is definedbypublic
dataandprivatedata.
• PublicData: the public information about the resident such as his family name,
apartmentnumber, access level andprivileges.
• PrivateData: the private information about the resident such as his first name,
dateofbirthandstatus.

3. RelatedWork
In this section,we present a state of the art about design and implementationmethod-
ologies of smart building systems. This domain has known some interestingworks and
development in the last decades. Most of theworks focus on the energy saving aspect
since, in such spaces, it is themost concern goalwith the high consumption of energy
and therefore, other aspects suchcomfort, assistance, safetyand securityareneglected.
