water are set differently and they are averaged for every hour per square metre in a typical day over the year. Weather data for August 7 th 2010 has been obtained from AMEDAS. This day represents a very hot day in Tokyo. Temperatures exceeded 34.8°C. The boundary conditions were created for all over the domain by considering both the weather data discussed above and the grid’s height. Time step was set to five minutes. 5.2.Results Figure 7. Air temperature simulations for hour 10.00 within the real environment of Shimbashi (left) and Minamidai (right) at pedestrian level, Tokyo, Japan. Inputted air temperature 33.3C, radiation 2.46 MJ/m 2 and wind speed 2.9 m/s blowing north north-easterly. All street canyons parallel or roughly parallel to the mean flow are well-ventilated and therefore no major air temperature perturbations or increase in temperatures. However, in closed building clusters either high-rise office buildings (see, Shimbashi) or low-rise residential buildings (see, Minamidai) air does not circulate and it is stuck within a recirculation zone that does not remove heat. Therefore, air temperatures increase within these zones. In Minamidai, these zones were linear and parallel to the mean flow. The design of the building blocks was nonetheless blocking ventilation.
