have a negative impact on the purification performance of the existing wastewater
treatment plant, which is based on biological processes, health risks due to contamination
of water resources from inlets in receiving environments. Therefore, the activity of the
five industrial units that are the subject of our study leads to an increasingly significant
degradation of the quality of ecosystems. This degradation is caused by a massive and
anarchic pollution, both via natural organic matter and by synthetic industrial products.
This pollution affects different compartments of the ecosystem (water, sediments, etc.).
In order to protect the wastewater treatment plant, commissioned since 2006, against the
harmful substances generated by the industrial zone of the city of Settat, the industrial
waste was diverted to Oued Boumoussa while waiting for the realization of the project
of industrial pollution control by setting as aims the assistance of polluting industrial
units in terms of the installation of adequate pretreatment systems and the follow-up of
their conformity with admissible thresholds fixed by the technical regulation of the Régie
Autonome De Distribution D'Eau Et D'Electricité De La Chaouia (RADEEC) [5]. So this
study is based on the analysis of physicochemical parameters such as pH, temperature,
biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended
solids (MES).
2. Case study
The city of Settat, located on the Casablanca-Marrakech road axis, 72 km south of
Casablanca, is the urban core of the province. The latter covers an area of 9888.4 square
kilometers. It is characterized by its agricultural vocation and a very important industrial
development. Concerning the geographical situation of the industrial zone of Settat, it is
located in the northern side of the city and is constituted of two parts [6] and [7] whose
characteristics are as follows: Industrial zone of Settat 1 st
and 2 nd
parts (rehabilitated
zone) developed by Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (CDG) and Municipality of Settat
with a total of 137 awarded lots and a recovery rate: 60%.

The province of Settat contains 205 industrial units (65% of the companies in the
region). The Agri-Food Industries sector leads with 61 companies (30% of the companies
in this province), followed by the Chemical and Para-Chemical Industries sector which
ranks second with 59 companies (29%); the third position belongs to the Metal and
Mechanical Industries sector with 47 companies (23%); Textile and Leather Industries
and Electrical and Electronic Industries occupy the fourth and fifth position respectively
with 25 and 13 companies accounting for 12% and 6% [8]. The industrial zone of the
city of Settat comprises about 25 operational industrial units whose essential activities
are textile, tanning, slaughtering, margarine, ceramics, treatment of gut and glassware.
The main industrial units of the city of Settat with their share of water consumption are
shown in table 1.
