A Case Study of Mobile Blended earning
in Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Abstract. With the rapid development of informational technologies and mobile
devices, blended learning is receiving more attention in higher educational learning
environment. Based on the relevant literature review of blended learning and
language learning and teaching, this paper explores learning and teaching when
mobile phones were used in the BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices) model to
implement blended learning in English as Foreign Language (EFL) language course
at university level.

1. Introduction
The rapid developments of informational technologies contribute to a technological
revolution taking place in higher education. In digital age, universities are confronted to
“provide for a larger and more diverse cross-section of the population, to cater for
emerging patterns on educational involvement which facilitate lifelong learning and to
include technology-based practices in the curriculum” (p.143) [1]. In 2004, Garrison [2]
claims that blended learning is the transformative force to accomplish the goals of higher
education. According to the Horizon Report (2019 High Edition edition), blended
learning is one of the preferred approaches to learning in higher education, attributing to
its flexibility and easy access to learning content for students. The future trends of
blended learning will move towards integrating digital learning platforms into blended
learning courses so as to achieve a student-centered collaborative personalized learning
experience in higher education [3].
In the field of foreign and second language learning and teaching, blended learning
has been receiving a lot of attention. An increasing body of empirical studies show that
blended learning can enhance the effectiveness of second language learning [4] [5] [6].
In 2017, Grgurovic [7] examined the literature review of blended language learning from
