well as recognize the activities carried out in it, reason why a reliability in system
engineering has to be considered [2].
All this, together with the fact that people can interact in an unexpected way with
these systems, makes the development of IE a noteworthy challenge and an extremely
difficult task, being innumerable the requirements to be taken into account.
Moreover, society expects that this type of systems will be marketed, as a result of
the transfer of knowledge generated after years of research. Self-driving cars are clear
examples of this. However, an accident in which one of these vehicles killed a woman
occurred last year [2].
Consequently, it is indispensable to apply the best practices, techniques and methods
to the diverse stages (e.g., requirement specification, verification, modelling, simulation,
validation, etc.) of the development of IE, such as the ones coming from Software
Engineering [4], which can help to analyse and determine the correctness of these error-
prone systems, with the aim of improving the crucial aspects of their security, safety and
reliability [5], as well as increasing user confidence in them [6].
In the last years, several methodologies to improve the different quality aspects in
the development of these systems, and particularly their reliability, have been proposed
(such as the ones described in [7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. However, none of them has been
universally accepted, and each methodology is normally used only by the people that
proposed it. Therefore, we think that greater collaboration among the members of our
community would be necessary in order to develop a more unified and holistic
methodology that can be collectively adopted as a standard.
Another aspect to consider in the development of IE is user expectations. A recent
study on this topic [12] analyses the literature on IE and concludes that, although most
of the articles make reference to users, only a small part of them involves them in any of
the phases of the development of these systems. Without any doubt, this aspect should
be improved in future developments of IE, involving their end users in order to produce
systems that are closest to their real needs and that people can trust.
To conclude, we would like to thank Dr. Daniela Micucci for accepting our
invitation to give the keynote speech of this edition, entitled Ambient Assisted Living for
an Ageing Society. The selected contributions, which include works on: the use of Wi-Fi
signals to improve the efficiency of an indoor localization system based on image
similarity, an approach to select the best web service among several similar ones to be
used in a given IE, a platform for long-term data collection to support the training of
algorithms for automatic human activity recognition, and a rule-based multi-agent
negotiation approach for airline operation control, represent a well-balanced distribution
of theoretical and practical contents. With all this, we hope to have a successful and
fruitful workshop, where all the audience actively participate and discuss on the topics
addressed. We also expect that readers enjoy the selected papers included in these
proceedings. Last but not least, we wish to express our sincere thanks to: the authors of
the submitted papers, for their very interesting and high quality contributions; WoRIE’19
Program Committee members, for their excellent work and invaluable support during the
review process; and IE’19 Workshops Chairs, for their help and support. All of them
have made possible to successfully organize the present edition of this workshop, which
is being consolidated year after year.
