Abstract Howdoweunderstanddisplacementandresettlementinthecontextofcli-
matechange?Thischapteroutlineschallengesanddebates in the literatureconnect-
ingclimatechangetothegrowingglobalflowofpeople.Webeginwithanoutlineof
theliteratureonenvironmentalmigration,specificallythedefinitions,measurements,
and formsof environmentalmigration.Thediscussion thenmoves to challenges in
the receptionofmigrants, treating the current scholarship onmigrant resettlement.
Wedetail a selectionofcases inwhich theenvironmentplaysa role in thedisplace-
mentofapopulation, includingsealevelriseinPacificIslandStates,cyclonicstorms
inBangladesh,anddesertificationinWestAfrica,aswellas theroleofdeforestation
inSouthAmerica’sSouthernConeasadriverofbothclimatechangeandmigration.
Weoutline examples of each, highlighting the complex set of losses and damages
incurredbypopulations ineachcase.
