17 SupportingClimateRiskManagementatScale… 407 Fig.17.6 Screenshot of Risk Geo-Wiki. Modelled global flood risk data overlaid on satellite imageryat the regional level for theKarnali,Nepal more.Theportal is intended tobeofpracticaluse tocommunity leadersandNGOs, governments, academia, industry and citizens who are interested in better under- standing the informationavailable tostrengthenfloodresilience. This isparticularly useful for communities and in locationswhere accurate topographicmaps are not available or the elevationmapping is so course that flood inundationmodelling for examples ismeaningless. As a starting point, a variety of global expert-sourced flood datasets (e.g., the GLOFRISmodel,Wardetal.2013) includedin theRiskGeo-Wikicanbedisplayed exhibiting an estimate of flood hazard, exposure and risk based on various flood frequencies/returnperiods—seeFig.17.6foraviewoftheKarnalibasin.This infor- mation is a starting point for global and regional analyses to conduct risk-based analysis andbroadly identifyhotspots. However, as thisfigureshows,globalexpert-basedmodelleddata isbynecessity coarse in termsof spatial resolutionandoftennotdirectlyapplicable tocommunity level needs.Hence, what is needed is the ability to capture local community level information inaglobal context. As introduced, ParticipatoryVulnerability andCapacityAssessment is awidely used tool to collect community level disaster risk and resilience informationand to informDRRstrategies, yet it isnot linkedtodigitisedinformationandbroadlyavail- able. TheRiskGeo-Wiki effort has developed a generalmethodological approach thatcombinescommunity-basedparticipatorymappingprocesses,whichhavebeen widelyusedbygovernmentsandnon-governmentorganisationinthefieldsofnatural resourcesmanagement, disasterriskreductionandruraldevelopment, withemerging internet-based collaborative digitalmapping techniques.Theproject digitised a set
