of responsibility to respond to Loss andDamage from climate change.Moreover,
establishing themechanismwill significantly aid inmuchneededcoordination and
collaboration betweenMoDMRandMoEF.As ofApril 2018, theGovernment of
Bangladeshhasformedaninter-ministerialcommitteeheadedbyMoDMRtodevelop
a 2-year pilot phase for exploring theNationalMechanism onLoss andDamage.
Aconcept note has alreadybeendeveloped and adetailedworkplan for the 2-year
pilot phase is being developed. The government of Bangladesh intends tomake a
publicannouncementof theNationalMechanismonLossandDamageatCOP24in
December2018.
A national mechanism to address Loss and Damage not only responds to the
needswithin thecountry, it also reaffirmsBangladesh’scommitment to thenational
targets and indicators within the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction
2015–2030.Furthermore,thefunctionsofthenationalmechanismreplicatethework
areasoftheWIM,signallingBangladesh’scommitmentstotheParisAgreement.For
aresourceconstrainedLDCcountry,theeffortsmadebyresearchers,thedevelopment
community and policymakers display a resourcefulness and creativity that can be
replicated incountries facingsimilarvulnerabilities and resourceconstraints.
