November, schrieb Selznick erneut an John Whitney, dass seine Manöver voll aufgegangen seien: „The Stothart Situation was all worked out beautifully, and then over the weekend two things occurred: Stothart had a few drinks on Saturday night, apparently, and did a lot of loose talking about how he was going to fix up Max's work. In case you don't know it, the musicians out here [das Büro von Whitney war in New York, das von Selznick in Los Angeles] are even more jealous of each other, and there are even more cliques among them than is true about producers, directors, actors etc. The result was that within ten minutes it was back to Max, and he was in a rage. ... However, Max spurred on by the Stothart episode, really went to town, and the result is that by tomorrow we will have considerably more than the half picture scored. And it looks as though we are going to be okay without Stothart. I am sure that in any case we can credit all our attempts to get Stothart with leading Max to faster and greater efforts."181 Stothart hatte übrigens zu keiner Zeit die Freigabe von MGM erhalten. Selznick hatte jedoch sein Ziel erreicht und war mit dem Endergebnis der Musik mehr als zufrieden. Bereits vier Tage später meldete sich Selznick wieder per Memo und diesmal war der Ton viel versöhnlicher: „... I think the score is Coming along fine and if you will just go mad with schmaltz in the last three reels I will undoubtedly be as happy through the years with the memory of a great Steiner score as has always been the case in the past."182 Selznick war so überzeugt von der Qualität der Musik, dass er kurz darauf bei der CBS anfragte, ob Interesse bestehe, diese Musik als Soundtrack herauszugeben. Da es zu die- ser Zeit keinen diesbezüglichen Bedarf gab, wurde erst 1954 eine Neuaufnahme mit ei- nem Ausschnitt dieser Musik auf den Markt gebracht. So sehr sich Max Steiner und seine Mitarbeiter 1939 allerdings bemühten, den Oscar für die Musik von Gone With The Wind gewannen sie nicht, wenngleich der Film mit insgesamt acht Auszeichnungen äußerst erfolgreich war. 181 Aus einem Memo von David O.
