Introduction Theglobal financial crisis (2008–2011),whose roots lay inquestionable, if not aberrant,practicesinthefinancialmarketshadalotoflessonstoteachaboutthe financial industry. The former Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace of the Holy Seemade itself an advocate of someof these lessons, publishing a small study inwhichitcalledforareformoftheinternational financialandmonetary systems in the context of a global public authority. In so doing, the Vatican Dicasterywas inspired andguidedby the suggestionof theCouncil Fathers of VaticanIIthat“givingwitnessandvoicetothefaithofthewholepeopleofGod”1, theChurchprovideseloquentproofofhersolidaritywith,aswellasherrespect andlovefortheentirehumanfamilywithwhichit isboundup,byengagingwith it in conversationabout its variousproblems.2The study, “Towards reforming theInternational financialandmonetarysystemsinthecontextofglobalpublic authority”3 sought to initiate one such conversation, at the same timemaking suggestions forending thecrisis andavoiding its recurrence.
