In this respect, informationandcommunicationtechnologies canplayadecisive role
through, for instance, smartmetering.”35
However indispensable, higher efficiencybackedbymore consistent systems is
not enough to reach a sustainable development path. Sustainability research
arguesof theneedfor sufficiency incombinationtohigherefficiencyandbetter
consistency.36Sufficiencyreferstochangesinlife-styleandacceptingandliving
within life-giving limits; for example, reducing food loss andwaste – on the
institutionalandpersonal level–orobservingat leastonemeatlessdayaweek.
“Due to reboundeffects, technical (and to some extent social) innovations, as
engineered, do not inevitably save resources and energy. Strategies focussing
solely on efficiency of products cannot be successful unless they are accom-
paniedbystrategiesthatenhancesocial innovationsthatfosteraparadigmshift
in consumptionpatterns.”37 “Sufficiencyandchanges in lifestyle should rather
be embedded, discussed and quantified independently of technology deci-
sions.”38Thethreeprinciplesefficiency, consistency,andsufficiencyaredeeply
interrelated, which is for instance relevant inviewofDfE:
“Asustainabledesignofproductsandservicesrequirestheintegrationofproduction-
orientated (efficiency and consistency) and consumption-orientated (sufficiency)
strategies. […] The goal is not to design sustainable products but rather to design
systems thatmanage to foster sustainable lifestyles.”39
Sufficiency requires a change ofmindsets and new orientation, a “voluntary
self-limitation”40, which has to be nourished by spiritual values (LS 222), in-
cluding thecultivationofa“capacity forcontemplationandreverence”(LS127
& 237).AcoremessageofLaudato si’ is that spiritual values likemindfulness,
