Threequestionsrequireexplanation.WhendepictingthesystemofBauer’s socialandpoliticalthought,Iendeavouredtopointouthowhiswayofthinking andtheresultinginconsistenciesinhisideologicalandpoliticaldecisionswere conditioned. The reason for thiswasmywish to avoid ‘pigeonholing’ Bauer by simply falling backon the readily availablemodel of threemain currents 12 Bauer’s extensive legacy of writing varies in quality.
