the analysis of visual and textual representations ofwatermonuments, harbours, andharbour
cities.18 On amore general level, several studies address the role of water in different urban
formations â besides the conventional towns (e.g. civitates, municipia), Punic emporia or the
emporia on theNorth andBaltic Seas, market places, palatia, or inland central places related
topalatines ormonasteries.
Somecross-sectionalstudiesonthesubjecthavealsobeenpublishedinrecentyears.19Most
recently,TerjeTvedtandTerjeOestigaardhavebrought togethermanyof these inacomprehen-
siveanalysisof âWater inHistoryâpublishedinninevolumesbetween2006and2016. Itprovides
adiachronichistorical andcomparativeperspectiveon thecomplex relationshipbetweenwater
and society.20Onevolumeof this series dealswith the issueof âWater andUrbanizationâ.21 The
study aims at understanding the relationship between water and the urban environment by
differentiating three aspects: the natural waterscape, humanmodifications of thewaterscape,
and ideas and managerial concepts of water.22 Consequently, this study follows a relatively
technical understandingof the relationbetweenwater andurbanity.
Here, instead,we focus on the social and cultural production of urban spaces. One theoretical
milestone for suchanapproachwasdevelopedbyHenri Lefebvre.23Hestarts fromtheassump-
