In a similarway, the experience of several architectural complexes in the city centre of the
colony of Luni was enhanced by small fountains or embeddedwater installations during the
early Imperial period. The spacebetween theold temple of theCapitoliumand its surrounding
three-wingedportico, for example, was transformed in themiddleof the 1st century toawide–
andelevated–marble-cladwater basin.25 As abuilt structure, the basin connected the temple

called sanctuary ofDiana), erected at about the same time,we find insteadwater installations
comparable to those inBrescia. Here too, thestaircase leading to thesmall templebuildingwas
flankedbyornamental fountains accentuating the temple and the stairs leading to it as a focal
point at theendof thecolonnadedcourtyardof the sanctuary.26Again, such fountainsadorned

small openair enclosure of unknown function at the southern endof the square, the so-called
area con fontane, comprised six small fountains surrounding a largemarble-clad pedestal and
an altar. The decorative fountainsmust have contributed substantially to the atmosphere and
specific experience of this small enclosure located at the public centre of the colony.28 These
