Staged thinkingwon’twork ina continuousprocess.
We needanotherwayof lookingatprocess tomakeContinuousDeliverywork.
2.4 SeparatingThinkingfrom Logistics
Thereare two problemstosolvehere:
1. The first is that there isnoone true wayor best practiceapproachto implement-
ing, for example, continuous delivery. Everyone does it slightly differently, so
anygeneric trainingschemehas tooffergenericpractices.
2. The second is that any credible training scheme must recognize that there are
skills that canbe taught in theclassroom, but theemployermust take on the role
ofexplaining local practicesandembeddingskills.
These local practices are what we call logistics. Logistics are how a principled
approach is applied locally. Locally might mean ‘across an entire organization’ or
it couldmeaneveryprojectyouworkonworksdifferently. Ifyouworkonmultiple
projects, therefore, you will have to adapt to different practices––even if you are
workingin thesame team.
Principlesand thinkingare global; logisticsare local.
It’s clear that to offer trainingalone is not enough.Theremust be a contribution
by the local employer to nurture trainees, coach them in local practices and give
themwork thatwill embed the skills and local approach.
Tooffer trainingtopractitioners,wemustseparate theprinciplesandthinking
processes fromthe logistics.
How dowe do this?
