Subconscious Requirements: The Fright of Every Tester 215
AgileapproacheslikeSpecificationbyExample,Behavior-DrivenDevelopment,
andDesignThinkingalsosignificantly reducethe riskofoverlookingsubconscious
requirements, as they heavily rely on real-life examples, customer empathy, and
early feedback. These approaches work best when applied by the whole team
throughout the entire development life cycle, so they are not suitable for testing
in isolation.
Subconsciousrequirementsareheretostay.TheKanomodelshowsusthatmany
requirements in the long run will end up as subconscious ones. From the Cynefin
frameworkwelearn that in the future, evenmoredevelopmentwill takeplace in the
complexandchaoticdomains,wherethe“unknownunknowns”and“unknowables”
predictmanysubconsciousrequirements.
The time has gone for testers to derive their tests from a solid and extensive test
basis.The futureof testingwill bepredominantlyexperiencebased!
