âI often think about my grandmother in Serbia and my
memories are changing.â Amir said.
âWhat is with our emotions? They change too.â Sonia said.
âThe âIâ doesnât change â it always stays the same.â Caroline said.
âEven if you were in the wheelchair the âIâ would stay the
same?â Fabio asked.
âYes, why not? It is just the body that changed, the âIâ stays
the same.â Caroline said.
âI think the âIâ would change, because my feelings, my ap-
pearance, my whole life would change â so the âIâ would change
too.â Amir said.
âI donât agree with you. You are still the same person, even if
your feelings and situation are different.â Caroline yelled.
âAnd what would happen if everyone in the world thought
you were someone else â would your âIâ still be the same?â So-
nia asked.
âAnd I wonder why I am me and not another person?â I
asked.
During the break we went outside to the schoolyard. Sud-
denly I saw Robert and Fabio. Robert had HarrisÂŽs basketball
cap in his hand. âSorry Harris,â they said. They gave Harris the
cap and ran off.
After school I walked home and still thought about my
baby photograph.
