Based on the results of an ethno- graphic study with participatory observation and interviews, the author illustrates the differencesandspecificpotentialsofbothpracticesbothfortheschool-basedformandin other social settings. A direct comparison reveals that each of the two forms follows a differentparadigm, andcan thuscompensate fordifferentpreconditionsor, respectively, promotedifferent skills. 1 Introduction Thispaperwill focuson two readingpractices: bookclubs anddialogic literary gatherings, which have seen an extraordinary growth. However, scientific re- search on this field in Spaindiffers from the status of international studies, as publications on book clubs, which began in the 1990s, are scarce and focus mainlyonhowtheyhavebeenpromoted1. In contrast, some studies have been published in Spain on dialogic literary gatherings2. Inanyevent, todate therehasbeennoresearchthathas focusedon the similarities and differences between book clubs and dialogical literary gatherings, both in terms of their theoretical foundations and their practices. Therefore, this bears further investigation in order to clarify how these two innovative strategiesoperate. Bookclubsanddialogical literarygatheringshaveat least sixsimilarities that arekey to the international recognitionof their success3: 1 Navarro/Yubero2004,Domingo/Sola2005,Aranda/Galindo2009,Moral/Arbe2013, Álvarez2016,Álvarez/Pascual2013, 2014. 2 Vallset al. 2008,Pulido/Zepa2010, Serranoet al. 2010, Flechaet al. 2013. 3 Valls et al. 2008,Aranda/Galindo2009,Duncan2012,Reed/Vaughn2012, Lyons/Ray 2014.
