Gauster, Wilhelm F#
b. Vienna, Jan. 6, 1901, d. Vienna, May 31, 1993 electrical engineer. Studied mechanical and electrical engineering at Vienna University of Technology. From 1924 researcher for ELIN AG, where he played a significant role in work leading to important developments. From 1945 Professor at the University of Technology, 1950-57 head of the University of North Carolina High Voltage Laboratory, for whose establishment he was largely responsible. 1957-71 Head of the Department for Fusion Engineering and director of the Magnet Laboratory of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. Returned to Austria in 1976. Noted for his ability to identify practical applications for theoretical insights.
