Grueber, Johannes#
Grueber, Johannes, b. Linz (Upper Austria), Oct. 28, 1623, d. Sárospatak (Hungary), Sept. 30, 1680, Jesuit priest, missionary, mathematician. Employed at Chinese Imperial Court from 1659-1661, where he was assigned to perform astronomical calculations and the geographic determination of the longitude and latitude of various places. First European to return to Europe from China by the overland route, travelled through Tibet, stayed in Lhasa and Kathmandu and crossed the Himalayas. His travel log (the very first about Tibet) is of major scientific value. Died as a field curate in the Austrian army.
