Wolfgang, Heiliger#

b. Swabia (probably at Pfullingen) around 924, d. Pupping (Upper Austria), Oct. 31, 994, Benedictine, missionary in Hungary around 972, bishop of Regensburg from 972 to 994. Introduced a reform of Austrian monasteries during his term of office at Regensburg. Stayed at Mondsee in 976/77, from where he probably founded several churches. The pilgrimage to St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut (on Lake Wolfgangsee), where he is said to have lived as a hermit, was first documented in 1306. Canonised in 1052; worshipped since the 14th and 15th century, especially in Upper Austria and in Salzburg.
