China hasbecomethe largestmarket forEVs, itsmarketclaiming35.4%of theworldwideEVscene in2017, an exorbitant rise from themere 6.3% in 2013 [188]. Chinese consumers bought aworld-topping 24.38millionpassengerelectricvehicles in2016.Chinahas thegreatestnumberofmanufacturers, led byBYDautos,whichsold96,000EVs in2016. Thisdrive inChina is fueledbygovernment initiatives adoptedtopromoteEVusetomitigate thecountry’sseriousairpollution.However, themajorityof Chinesevehiclesareinthe$36,000rangeandoffers limitedrange,buthigh-endvehiclesmanufacturing isontherise inChina too. Thishugemarkethasattractedmajorcarmakersallover theworld—Ford, Volkswagen,Volvo, andGeneralMotors—whohave theirownEVs in theChinesemarket andare poisedto introducemoremodels in thecomingyears [189].
