Theelectricvehiclemarket isgrowingmuch faster than theconventionalvehiclemarket, and
insomeregionsEVsarecatchingupwith ICEvehicles in termsof thenumberofunits sold. China
hasbecomethe largestmarket forEVs, itsmarketclaiming35.4%of theworldwideEVscene in2017,
an exorbitant rise from themere 6.3% in 2013 [188]. Chinese consumers bought aworld-topping
24.38millionpassengerelectricvehicles in2016.Chinahas thegreatestnumberofmanufacturers, led
byBYDautos,whichsold96,000EVs in2016. Thisdrive inChina is fueledbygovernment initiatives
adoptedtopromoteEVusetomitigate thecountry’sseriousairpollution.However, themajorityof
Chinesevehiclesareinthe$36,000rangeandoffers limitedrange,buthigh-endvehiclesmanufacturing
isontherise inChina too. Thishugemarkethasattractedmajorcarmakersallover theworld—Ford,
Volkswagen,Volvo, andGeneralMotors—whohave theirownEVs in theChinesemarket andare
poisedto introducemoremodels in thecomingyears [189]. Figure75showsthe tenhighest selling
EVs inChina in2016.

Fromaglobalperspective, salesofEVgrewby36%in theUSA;Europesawagrowthof13%,
while Japanobservedadecreaseof11%inthesameperiod. BYDdominatedtheglobalmarketwitha
13.2%share, followedbyTesla insecondplace (9.9%); theothermajorcontributors canbe listedas
VolkswagenGroup,BMWGroup,Nissan,BAIC,andZoyte.However, theTeslaModelSremainedthe
best-sellingEVin2016with50,935units sold, followedbytheNissanLeafEVwith49,818units [191].
