remaining responsive and adaptable to the iterative design process needed to
execute the spillway repairs under the very short timeframe.
Active, on-site coordination and QA/QC procedures were critical to the
successful implementation of the field exploration program. Although there were
daily challenges, the experienced on-site engineering geologists and geotechnical
engineers remained flexible and good humored throughout.
The configuration of real-time, accessible instrumentation readings allowed
the close monitoring of potential slope instability and changes in groundwater
conditions. Placing the instrumentation data in one centralized location that was
easily accessible by anyone on the team at any time provided the ability to examine
short- and long-term performance trends quickly and remotely. Centralized data
storage was essential for time-critical information to be accessible by the design
team as needed.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The authors wish to acknowledge many firms and/or entities who assisted
with the geologic and geotechnical exploration program: DWR engineering
geologists from several divisions, state-wide; Lettis Consultants International,
InfraTerra, the United States Bureau of Reclamation, the United States Army
Corps of Engineers, Gregg Drilling and Testing, Cascade Drilling, Ruen Drilling,
GeoVision Geophysical Services, Gasch Geophysics, NorCal Geophysical (with
Terracon), GEI Consultants, Spectrum Petrographics, Cooper Testing Laboratory,
Blackburn Consulting, Willamette Geological Service, and Syblon Reid
Contractors. Specifically, thank you to Nick Hightower, Bryan Dussell, and Andy
Tate, who organized the field teams and were instrumental in successfully
executing this enormous exploration program.
