INTRODUCTION Throughout history, there have been a series of catastrophic events in the Cordillera Blanca generated by mudflows coming from glacier reservoirs (see also [1] and [2]). One of the main causes of these events are the detachment of glacial masses that impact at the lagoons located at the base of the glacier, generating waves that produce overflows and in some cases a break of the dam body or the moraine. This omnipresent hazard in the Cordillera Blanca together with the increasing mean temperature due to climate change effects (see [3]), which are most visible in the tropical glacier regions, lead to the necessity to 582
