4. CONCLUSIONS
The mathematical methodologies used to analyse and interpret the
structural behaviour of the Baixo Sabor dam during the first filling of the reservoir
have proven to be adequate for the intended purposes, in particular regarding to
the consideration of both the instantaneous and the differed effects of the main
loads, namely the hydrostatic pressure and the temperature variations. Mention
should be done to the suitable evaluation of the deformability characteristics of
the dam’s concrete and of the rock mass foundation, as well as the thermal
variations in the dam’s body, that allowed a good adjustment between the
monitoring data and the structural model results.
The adequate planning of the first filling of the reservoir and the results of
both the inspections and the behaviour analysis and interpretation made it
possible to carry out a proper monitoring and safety control of the dam during this
critical period. The overall results obtained show the good performance of the
dam and constitute a reference state for the observation and safety control of the
dam over time. 140
