Digital coaching: A conceptually distinct form of coaching? 43 phone, e-mail, video communication, synchronous text chat or asynchronous voice messages are essential to any remote coaching process that is facilitated by a coach. Table 1 lists some of the different types of basic media that are used to facilitate the coaching dialogue. Table 1: Basic media types to facilitate the coaching dialogue Video communication 3D graphical self- representation Audio communication Text-based communication Synchronous Video calls, HD videoconferencing (Desktop-based or through HMD) avatar-centric interaction (with built-in audio or text chat) Telephone/VoIP Synchronous text chat Asynchronous Asynchronous video messages Audio messages Asynchronous text chat/e-mail Problem-solving media can be used during the coaching session or in-between sessions, and they tend to serve as a complementary function to the coaching dialogue. For instance, online text-based questions and reflective journals may be used as add-ons in-between coaching sessions to support clients’ thought process and to scaffold their learning process by breaking it into small, manage- able steps. Visualisation aids, such as mind-mapping software and whiteboard tools, can be used to stimulate reflection on the coaching issue, to support the analysis of the coaching problem and to identify a course of action. Alterna- tively, simulations allow perspective-taking, role-play, the creation of visual met- aphors and to test out potential solutions. Table 2 illustrates the diverse types of problem-solving media. Table 2: Supporting media types to complement the coaching conversation Audio-visual Visual Auditory Text Interactive/ non-interactive videos 3D simulations (virtual worlds, constellation tools) Visualisation aids (graphs, online images, mind maps, whiteboard sketches) Podcasts Pre-defined online question sets, reflective journals, online resources (blogs, articles), pre-coaching assessments Moreover, problem-solving media, such as sets of questions that guide the cli- ent from goal clarification and goal setting through to setting an action plan to attain a goal, can be used for self-coaching (see table 3).
