Geiringer15 (1899–1989), even thoughGeiringer was personally a stu-
dent of Adler’s. Who else was teaching? People like Curt Sachs16
(1881–1959)orAlfredEinstein17(1880–1952).Einsteinsurelywouldnot

TheConceptof aComprehensiveMusicology
BN: GlenHaydon reallywas a sort of bridge.Heproduced this concept of a
comprehensivemusicology, to be sure, with ethnomusicology in there,
butasasortofthinchapter,butit’sstill there.It’salittlebitthewayAdler
presents it in his 1885 article.18 There is ethnomusicology, in a little
corner. But still. An interesting remark along these lines in the auto-
biography, whenhe talks, in about1927,whenhewas trying to arrange
forhissuccession,or influencehissuccession,hesays,“well, it reallyhas
to be a music historian,” because compared with musicology, com-
parativemusicologydoesnotqualifyasafulldiscipline.Nevertheless,he
didincludeit. Ithinkwhatactuallyhappened,though,waswhathedidn’t
want, andthatwas that thesuccessor inthatchairbecameRobertLach19
(1874–1958),whowas theoppositeofAdler inall kindsofways.
PVB: It certainly securedthat lineofvergleichend-systematischeMusikwissen-

BN: IthinktheideaofacomprehensivemusicologywassomethingthatAdler
introduced in theUnited States.OrAdler’s students introduced. On the
otherhand,whatwasmusicology like in theUnitedStatesbeforeall the
cology at the University of Chicago. His writings on the music of the Renaissance are
internationally influential.
