Hewas chief of the Library of CongressMusic Division for thirty-fiveyears. 28 ErichMoritz vonHornbostel was an Austrian and German ethnomusicologist of Jewish heritage. He studied chemistry inVienna and psychology in Berlin, where he conducted research at the Phonogramm-Archiv. His contributions to the use of sound recording in fieldworkandorganologyare foundational for the fieldof ethnomusicology. 29 HealsostudiedwithArnoldScheringandCurtSachsinBerlin,writingadissertationonthe subject, “ÜberdieobjektiveundsubjektiveTonintensität” in1933.
