founded, Ithink, in1934,20 therearesomemusichistorians,but thereare
just asmany peoplewho are involved inmusic theory orwhat became
ethnomusicology.

BN: Charles, yes. GeorgeHerzog22 (1901–1983)was there.23HelenRoberts24
(1888–1985). Also, Joseph Schillinger25 (1895–1943), awacky composer
withatheoretical system.HenryCowell26 (1897–1965). Ican’t remember
the entire list. It wasmuchmore evenly distributed between historical
musicologyandeverybodyelse. Forexample,onepersonwhowas there
wasHaroldSpivacke27 (1904–1977). Spivacke,ofcourse,becamechiefof
theMusic Division of the Library of Congress. He had done his Ph.D.
under ErichMoritz vonHornbostel28 (1877–1935) in somekindof sys-
tematic-musicology subject inBerlin.29 If I can lookat it fromanAmer-
icanviewpoint, all theseEuropeans cameand they said, “what youguys
are doing, that’s not the real musicology. Real musicology is studying

heritage. He studied chemistry inVienna and psychology in Berlin, where he conducted
research at the Phonogramm-Archiv. His contributions to the use of sound recording in
fieldworkandorganologyare foundational for the fieldof ethnomusicology.
