Chapter2 TheEthicalChallenges in theContext ofClimateLossandDamage IvoWallimann-Helmer,LukasMeyer,KianMintz-Woo,ThomasSchinko andOliviaSerdeczny Abstract This chapter lays out what we take to be themain types of justice and ethical challenges concerning those adverse effects of climate change leading to climate-related Loss and Damage (L&D).We argue that it is essential to clearly differentiatebetweenthechallengesconcerningmitigationandadaptationandthose ethical issues exclusively relevant for L&D in order to address the ethical aspects pertaining to L&D in international climate policy. First, we show that depending on howmitigation and adaptation are distinguished fromL&D, the primary focus of policymeasures and their ethical implicationswill vary. Second, wedistinguish between a distributive justice framework and a compensatory justice scheme for deliveringL&Dmeasures.Third, inorder tounderstand thedifferentiated remedial responsibilitiesconcerningL&D,wecategorise themeasuresandpolicyapproaches available. Fourth, dependingon thekindofL&Dandwhich remedies arepossible, weexplainthedifferencebetweenremedialandoutcomeresponsibilitiesofdifferent actors.
