Chapter12 IntegratedDisasterRisk Management andAdaptation W.J. Wouter Botzen, Laurens M.Bouwer,Paolo Scussolini, Onno Kuik, MarjolijnHaasnoot,Judy Lawrence and Jeroen C. J. H.Aerts Abstract Thischapterdiscusses integratedapproaches to themanagementof risks relatedtoextremeweatherandclimatechange. This isdonewiththeLossandDam- age (L&D)mechanismof theUNFCCCinmind.Relevant insightsareprovided for climate policy negotiators and policymakers on how riskmanagement and adap- tation interactwithL&Dsolutions, and vice versa, on howL&D-related activities can support risk reduction and adaptation in vulnerable countries. Particular atten- tion is devoted to how riskmanagement can help society confront the impacts of weather disasters in relation to anthropogenic climate change. A holistic view of riskmanagement is presentedbydiscussing: the state-of-the art of risk assessment methods;(cost-benefit)evaluationsofriskmanagementoptions;household-scalerisk reductionstrategies; insuranceschemesfor residual riskandtheir relationswithrisk reduction; and thedesignofadaptationpathways tocopewithuncertain timingand intensityofclimatechangeimpacts.Eachtopicis illustratedwithconcretecasestud- ies. Finally, conclusions are drawnon the links betweendisaster riskmanagement, climateadaptationand theL&Dmechanism. W.J.WouterBotzen (B) ·P.Scussolini ·O.Kuik · J.C.
