Recent studieshavealsoemphasised theclose linkagesbetweenclimatechange, disastersandconflictinthePacific,andsuggestthatrelocationsduetoclimatechange might become frequent in the region alreadyby the2040s (Weir andVirani 2011). Fiji announced recently that it had identified 676 coastal communities in need of relocation out ofwhich 42 need to be relocatedwithin the next decade (FijiNews 2014). However, Campbell et al. (2005) also list 86 cases of existing community relocations in thePacific,whichsignifies themovementofpeoplehistorically in the region—note thatmanyof these arepartial and local.Wenowanalyse the risk and options space for theSouth-West (SW)Pacific Islandstates.
