17.3 TheZurichFloodResilienceAlliance:
AComprehensiveScience-Policy-PracticePartnership
There has been anupspring of partnerships covering the boundary space fromsci-
encetopolicytopractice,particularlyinrelationtodisasterriskmanagement,climate
adaptation and resilience.TheZurichFloodResilienceAlliance (ZFRA), a unique
alliancewithleadingpartnersfromthedevelopmentandhumanitarianNGOsectors,
academia and theprivate sector has embarkedona journey tohelpbuild resilience
to flood risk in communities across the globe in order tomake a difference for at
least 250,000floodprone households up tomid 2018, householdswhich are often
facing erosive risks shaped importantly by climate change. Themulti-year initia-
tive set up and co-generated byZurich Insurance aims to operationalise,measure,
and help build the resilience of communities to floods—themost devastating nat-
ural hazard globally. This extensive action and research program brings together
expertiseandskillsonriskmodelingandsystemsscienceasappliedby theresearch
partners IIASA andWharton Business School with risk engineering expertise of
Zurichandon-the-groundpresenceof theInternationalFederationofRedCrossand
RedCrescent Societies (IFRC) plus the international developmentNGO,Practical
Action(Fig.17.2).TheFloodResilienceAllianceaimstoenhancecommunityflood
resilience by exploring innovativeways to reduce risk before aflood strikes.NGO
collaboratorshaveusedresearchfindings toaid in thedesignandimplementationof
interventions tobenefit communities.
