Weare aware that “by itself themarket cannot guarantee integral human de- velopment and social inclusion” (LS 109) and that “environmental protection cannot be assured solely on the basis of financial calculations of costs and benefits” (LS 190). We need a paradigm shift in all our economic activities, inspiredagainbyCSD(P). All economic activities should be at the service of the entire human com- munity.AsPopePaulVIwrote:“GodintendedtheEarthandeverythinginit for theuseofallhumanbeingsandpeoples.(…)createdgoodsshouldflowfairly to all”.23 It is an essential componentof theChurch’s social teachings. “Theprin- ciple of the subordination of private property to the universal destination of goods, and thus the right of everyone to their use, is a golden rule of social conductand‘thefirstprincipleofthewholeethicalandsocialorder’.”24(LS93). ItislaudablethattheAustrianBishopsConferenceinunionwiththeReligious OrdersofAustriahavepublishedasetofguidelines for theeconomicmanage- ment and financial investmentsof theChurch to servehumanity andcreation.
