Preface This volume is theoutcomeofan international and interdisciplinary colloquiumheld inKiel in October 2018. This colloquiummarked the first stepping stoneof theExcellenceClusterROOTS ofSocial,EnvironmentalandCulturalConnectivities inPastSocieties.WithinthisExcellenceClus- ter, the subclusterUrban ROOTS is interested in the historical aspects of the complex urban roots of our cities today.
