Preface
This volume is theoutcomeofan international and interdisciplinary colloquiumheld inKiel in
October 2018. This colloquiummarked the first stepping stoneof theExcellenceClusterROOTS
ofSocial,EnvironmentalandCulturalConnectivities inPastSocieties.WithinthisExcellenceClus-
ter, the subclusterUrban ROOTS is interested in the historical aspects of the complex urban
roots of our cities today. One such phenomenonwhich stands at the starting point of our re-
searchactivity is the role ofwaterwithin cities.Manyof our principal investigatorswithin this
subclusterare represented in thisvolumeby theirpapers, andexternal colleaguesbring invery
fruitful contributions that allow theperspective tobewidened.
Asthecolloquiumtookplaceevenbeforetheworkintheclusterhadstarted, itwasfinanced
by theGraduateSchoolHumanDevelopment inLandscapes,while the funds for thepublication
come from the subclusterUrban ROOTS. Many have contributed to the successful finishing of
