Contrary to thisveryprominentposition, however, bothwells inDelphiandTegeahadnorepre- sentative structure above ground. In Tegea, the presence of clampholes on theupper sides of theslabs indicates that thewallcontinuedupwardsover theouter level–presumably it secured the shaft in the form of a lowparapet. In both cases, however, a higher or evenmonumental architecture above ground can certainly be ruled out, as the low thickness of thewall of 0.2– 0.25m does not support this.15 Therefore, the parapet and stairwell were the only visible el- ements.
