Contrary to thisveryprominentposition,however,bothwells inDelphiandTegeahadnorepre-
sentative structure above ground. In Tegea, the presence of clampholes on theupper sides of
theslabs indicates that thewallcontinuedupwardsover theouter level–presumably it secured
the shaft in the form of a lowparapet. In both cases, however, a higher or evenmonumental
architecture above ground can certainly be ruled out, as the low thickness of thewall of 0.2–
0.25m does not support this.15 Therefore, the parapet and stairwell were the only visible el-
ements. Significantly, the stairwells arenot directed towards a central viewingposition.
15 Glaser 1983, 14 interprets themiddle step of the staircase as a support for door jambs, as laterØstby 2014, 17.
Suchadoorwould require a certainheight of thewall, since thepivot of thedoor leaf requires anupper counter-
part. However, there is neither a thresholdwith theusual holes for a door (pivot hole and latchhole), nor dowel
holes for a possible anchoringof thedoor jambs, so that this interpretation ismore thanquestionable. InDelphi,
