equatedwith theareawithin theperirrhanteria.
Consequently,boundariesmarkedbywater, orby the ritualuseofwater, arenot congruent
with the architectural boundaries. In particular, the monumental propylon architecturally
marked the transition to thesanctuary.The ritedepassageofpurificationcould takeplaceboth
spatially in front of and behind the propylon. The specific ritual of perirrhansismay also have
beencarriedoutwhileentering thepropylon.However, thepropylonwasneveraplaceofexten-
sive washing and water basins were not integrated into the architecture as an integral part.
Although thepropylon’smain taskwas tomake thecrossingof theborder a spatial experience,
for example, through the difference in level or the strong shading in a closed building, it did
not primarily serve as a place of ritual performance. Thismeans that the central ritual action,
which can be regarded as a prerequisite for the constitution of sacred space, often did not
receive its ownprominentarchitectural stagingorwas spatially separated fromthearchitectur-
allymarked boundary itself. Ritual and architectural staging, respectively agency and percep-
tion,maytosomeextent lie spatiallyclose together,but inmostcases theyremainconceptually
clearly separated, independent elements.75
