In particular, the monumental propylon architecturally marked the transition to thesanctuary.The ritedepassageofpurificationcould takeplaceboth spatially in front of and behind the propylon. The specific ritual of perirrhansismay also have beencarriedoutwhileentering thepropylon.However, thepropylonwasneveraplaceofexten- sive washing and water basins were not integrated into the architecture as an integral part. Although thepropylon’smain taskwas tomake thecrossingof theborder a spatial experience, for example, through the difference in level or the strong shading in a closed building, it did not primarily serve as a place of ritual performance. Thismeans that the central ritual action, which can be regarded as a prerequisite for the constitution of sacred space, often did not receive its ownprominentarchitectural stagingorwas spatially separated fromthearchitectur- allymarked boundary itself.
