Abstract The chapter explores the competences that university educators should
master inour increasinglydigital, openandconnected societies inorder tofill their
role effectively and responsibly. Starting from a brief analysis of the concepts of
collaborative learningandopeneducation,weanalyse three teachers鈥檆ompetencies
frameworks, focusingon thedigital, collaborationandopennessaspectsofcontem-
porary teaching.Weconclude that educators shouldnotbuild radicallynewcompe-
tencesbutshouldratherupdatetheircompetencesinlinewithemergingneeds.Also,
wenotice that someadditionalcompetenceareasshouldbedevelopedbyeducators,
if wewant them to be able to bridge thework of students in formal and informal
settings.Weproposesixcompetencesareasinthissense:personaldatamanagement,
capacity to leverage the openweb, intercultural digital dialogues, critical view on
media, digital ethical issues, accessibility. These areas are becoming increasingly
important for educators tobeable to critically engage learners in the core issuesof
ourdigital, networkedandopensocieties, guiding them鈥攊nopenandcollaborative
ways鈥攖owards solutions to thenewlyemergingproblemsofour times.

We are living in an increasingly open and participatory society, characterised by
developments suchas agrowing importanceof informal learning, newunderstand-
ingsof intellectualproperty,mixedmodesofculturalexpressionsandamoreproac-
tive conception of citizenship (Jenkins, Ito, & boyd, 2015). The impact of these
developments on theway people learn is twofold.On the one hand, the pervasive
